Many great events are coming up soon. First of all, Toronto’s Seedy Saturday is this Saturday, February 28th! Not Far From The Tree (which made its debut at last year’s event) will be there proudly. This year, Seedy Saturday will be held at the Wychwood Barns and in the afternoon (2-6pm). At Seedy Saturday, Not [...]

Ward 21: Joe’s Midterm Check-In

Photo credit: photopia / HiMY SYeD. This evening, Toronto’s Ward 21 likely won’t feel the need to hope for change, but rather to celebrate and renew our commitment to it. Our first full season has been good to us. While our true success lies in the stories of those who have made not far from the tree happen, here are some numbers to give a brief sketch of our success: 3,003 lbs. of fresh fruit picked from residential properties in Toronto (mostly Ward 21); 40 [...]

It was held in a spot which was as far removed from the ground and trees as is possible: a beautifully sleek condo kitchen on the [...]

Staying Close to the Tree All Winter

This Sunday, not far from the tree will be hosting a preserving workshop for a few lucky volunteers (it was first RSVP, first served). An amazing group of above-and-beyond volunteers have been planning every last detail of this workshop. They’ve worked so hard to pull this together, I’m sure their love and toil will come [...]

Close to 100 tour-goers showed up for today’s tasty jaunt! We took over the grounds of Spadina Museum and surrounding neighbourhood for one of the Toronto Tree Tours. Some personal highlights: witnessing the smiles and conversations that erupted when participants got to taste the heritage apple varieties; learning about the engineering marvel of one particularly [...]

We sold over a bushel of Spadina’s heritage apples and several pounds of Ward 21′s backyard pears. Pretty exciting, considering they were bought by Jamie Kennedy Kitchens. Not part of our normal operations, certainly. But when the last minute invitation arrived, we thought it’d be nice to participate. The fruit was used at the From the [...]
