- Hello, I’m Avery Peters. I have been volunteering with Not Far From the Tree for 3 years now. I began as a gleaner, last year I was a supreme gleaner and now I’m volunteering as a Communications Intern along with Visha.
I first discovered Not Far From The Tree through my research when I moved to Toronto in 2008. I was looking for different sources of local food. One of my first stops was the Toronto Farmer’s Market Network. I stumbled across the “other resources” page and found an article on Not Far From The Tree. I was so excited to discover someone putting Toronto’s fruit to use.
Having grown up in Niagara I was spoiled with so much fruit in my backyard. I was worried that I wouldn’t have the same access to fruit in Toronto. Thanks to Not Far From The Tree I was excited to find that I could find fruit even closer to my home in Toronto than I could to my home in St. Catharines growing up.
Currently, I am training as an editor at Ryerson University in their Publishing program. I am going to be spending my time volunteering with Not Far From The Tree by writing and editing for the blog.
I am excited to be volunteering with Not Far From The Tree again this year. I have a special passion for stories and will be seeking them out amongst the volunteers and others involved with this wonderful organization. Maybe I will happen across you on one of the picks or events!
