Toronto Bike Awards
Oct 15th, 2012 by Paul Stewart, Metcalf Foundation Intern
Last week Not Far From The Tree was honoured with a Bicycle Friendly Business Award for Best Small Business. The award was in recognition of our use of cargo bikes to pick, deliver and donate all the fruit that we harvest in Toronto. Toronto has 1.5 million pounds of fruit growing within its borders and Not Far From The Tree is seeking to pick it all, and deliver it all by bike. We mobilize our team of 46 Supreme Gleaners to ride our 11 cargo bikes throughout the city and lead the hundreds of fruit picks we do every season. This award is the result of those Supreme Gleaners hard work, sweat and sometimes tears pedaling the cargo bikes laden with hundreds of pounds of fruit.
The ceremony was held at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern and all proceeds from the event went to support Bikes Without Borders. Six different awards were given out and a packed house cheered on each recipient. It was an energizing night that brought together the cycling community and displayed Toronto’s potential as a bike friendly city.
