Let Them Eat Pie!
Oct 3rd, 2012 by Avery Peters, Communications Intern
Jenna Hossack will be hosting a pie-making workshop for Not Far From the Tree in a few days! She answered a few of our questions to prepare you for the excitement! If you’re interested in joining in, the details are below the interview.
What do you do when you’re not helping out at Not Far From the Tree?
I usually work as a pastry cook. I also knit, practice yoga and ride my bike.
So far, what is your most memorable experience with Not Far From the Tree?
My most memorable experience so far was the serviceberry pick I did this summer with two other Supreme Gleaners. We did three trees on one street, all in front yards. We met so many people who were walking down the street and we were able to tell them that, yes, these berries are edible! My most wonderful experience was delivering the berries to Sagatay. The man who received them was thrilled because he grew up eating them out west and he didn’t know that they grew here too! He knew lots of their clients would also be excited too. It made my day to share knowledge about Toronto’s fruit in two different ways.
What excites you most about leading a pie-making workshop for Not Far From the Tree?
I’m really excited to lead this workshop because it’s yet another opportunity to teach others about fruit. I haven’t been able to go on a lot of picks recently so I’m also happy to be able to work with Not Far From The Tree in a different capacity. Also, it’s pie — hard not to get excited about that!
What is your favourite type of pie to eat? make? share?
My favourite pie to eat us pumpkin with whipped cream on top. For some reason, ever since I was a little kid, I eat it by scraping the custard out and eating that first, then eating the crust. My stepmom used to think that I didn’t like the crust!
I’ll make any pie — fruit pies especially. I also love making savoury pies like quiche!
There are different pies I like to share: pumpkin and apple for breakfast with my mom in the morning after Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, or chocolate pie straight out of the pan with my best friend while we’re in our pyjamas watching a silly movie. Good pie and good people are always great.
