Introducing Becky Thomas!
Jun 5th, 2012 by Becky Thomas, Community Engagement Specialist
My name is Becky Thomas and I am Not Far From The Tree’s new Community Engagement Specialist.
I am a long time tree-climber and fruit-picker, a love affair which began at an early age when I climbed my backyard pear tree to get closer to a friendly looking cat…which turned out to be a surprisingly friendly raccoon. My interest in climbing trees and exploring the great outdoors inspired me to spend several summers leading canoe trips through wilderness areas of Ontario and Quebec, and instilled in me a desire to minimize my impact on the natural world.
Since then, I have worked primarily in the non-profit sector, doing community outreach work with environmental and social justice organizations in Atlantic Canada and Latin America, and coordinating volunteer programs in Toronto with Luminto and YWCA Toronto.
For the next several months, I will focus on strengthening Not Far From The Tree’s volunteer program, enhancing community engagement and social media efforts, and organizing fun and exciting events throughout the season. To achieve all this, I look forward to collaborating with Not Far From The Tree’s incredible team of volunteers, staff and supporters.
Here’s to a fruitful season!

What kind of tree is that in the photo?
Good question. I believe it’s either a grapefruit or pomelo tree. The photo was taken at a community-run farm in Honduras, just outside Tegucigalpa, the country’s bustling capital city.
