Our cherries have made it.
Jul 10th, 2009 by Laura Reinsborough
Being placed on a doilie signifies a whole new level of “making it” in the culinary world. Our backyard-foraged cherries were treated with class and served on a silver platter at the season’s inaugural Harvest Wednesday Tasting.
Last year we attended the tastings but never quite coordinated having our fruit used in Chef Marc Breton‘s menu. This week that changed, and what a change it was! Marc concocted a rich sorbet that was densely-packed with flavour from our city-crafted sweet cherries.
Typically, all of the fruit we harvest from backyards is given away: 1/3 to the homeowner; 1/3 to the volunteers; and 1/3 to social service agencies. But when the homeowner declines their share, this gives us a little room to experiment with selling to chefs and other food connoisseurs.
As the season progresses, we’ll see what else Marc comes up with. We’ll be at all of the Harvest Wednesday Tastings this year, so mark your calendars and get your tickets!
Harvest Wednesday Tastings 2009, at the Gladstone Hotel, 6:30-8:30pm:
