A cherry-picking marathon
Jul 4th, 2009 by Laura Reinsborough
What better way to launch our 2009 fruit-picking season than with a cherry-picking marathon?
Cherries are the kind of crop that seems to ripen all at once. In Toronto’s Ward 21, tucked up the hill of Toronto’s mini-escarpment, a plethora of cherry trees make themselves known this time of year. It is no surprise that one street in the neighbourhood is called Cherrywood.
We harvested cherries from four trees on three properties yesterday, our first harvest of the season. In the short walk between those three properties, dozens more ripe cherry trees could be found. To make things full circle from last year, the first two cherry trees we picked from this year were the same two that we first ever picked!
We are off to a great season, thanks to support from the Community Go Green Fund, Live Green Toronto, Carrot Cache, Greening OPSEU, and many private donations. Our three Hub Coordinators got a chance to lead their first fruit picks yesterday, and our ever-incredible volunteers were out in full force!

Congrats to the first pick of the season!
