not far from the tree think tank #1
Jan 11th, 2008 by Laura Reinsborough
On Monday, January 7, I organized a think tank for not far from the tree. The way I see it, we’ve run a successful fruit harvesting program for one short season involving Spadina Museum and the Stop Community Food Centre’s Market. But where do we go from here?
The market is now in hibernation, soon to reopen in May. The fruit trees are also dormant for the winter, giving us time to consider our options for next season. Will we focus on strengthening what we’ve been doing so far, will we expand this into a comprehensive, city-wide fruit harvesting program, or will we settle on something wildly practical in between?
An amazing group of extravagant folks gathered in my humble abode to brainstorm these same questions. It was an honour to host such a group. There was enough energy, creativity, experience, knowledge, and wisdom packed into my tiny dining room to solve all problems of food insecurity in our city, I’m sure. And, in fact, that’s exactly what most of those people are doing!
An unfortunate spout of food poisoning has prevented me from posting until now, but it hasn’t stopped me from buzzing with energy and ideas. I’m just about to send the results of our brainstorm session around to the group, and then we’ll meet again in a month or so to decide how we want to proceed. One project may come out of this, or a dozen. What I’m sure of, however, is that the result(s) will be spectacular.
