Art: Danny Custodio’s Azulejos
Feb 17th, 2009 by Laura Reinsborough
Until March 8th, Cambridge Galleries Preston (Cambridge, Ontario) is showing work by Danny Custodio, much of which focuses on his Portuguese father. Pictured above is a photo of his father’s fig tree transposed onto Portuguese ceramic tiles (aka azulejos).
From the press release: “In his photo-mosaics Custodio alternately reuses images from family photo albums or restages family events, including his father’s labours. These reenactments give the artist first-hand insight into how the Portuguese community have cultivated neighbourhoods and sustained their ethnic heritage.”
