market report: september 29th
Oct 7th, 2007 by Laura Reinsborough
I picked soooo many carrots today, as many as I could possibly transport! I was able to pick two rows before my panier and backpack were full to overflowing, each row of a different heirloom variety.
The many-pronged variety, shown here, sold faster than the skinny and straight ones. I think most market-goers are excited to get something real, something not as plastic as what the grocery store offers. They like their blemished apples because it proves they’re organic and they like their “mutant” carrots because it proves just the opposite – that they haven’t been mutated at all! No Frankenstein engineering, and no pesticides used. Just local, sustainable, and organic produce for cheap.
Then I found myself in a bit of a conundrum. I had packed it all away, but could I really bike this huge load of top-heavy carrots the 1.3 km to the market? I got a few funny looks on the way, but enjoyed every second of the absurd, urban agriculture performance!
After the market, I headed off to Nuit Blanche where I was working two shifts: 5:30-7:30 pm and 1:30-7:30 am (I’m still recovering and I’m still looking for your sympathy). I hear the dances at Casa Loma (Spadina House’s immediate neighbour) were a highlight.
