Apples anyone?
Jul 20th, 2008 by Suzanne Long
We picked our first of the season in the Spadina orchard on Saturday. Red Astrachan apples. Tart, tiny and great for pies. Perishable. Sometimes called Abe Lincoln, Red Ashmore, or American Red. Once common on local farms, now a seasonal rarity. Not your average Red Delicious.
There were a few new faces at our market table this week, including lovage, sweet cicely, shelling peas and tiny blue potatoes. The fruit went quickly: gooseberries, apples, raspberries, blackcurrants, mulberries, and rhubarb followed by our small (but select) assortment of herbs, vegetables and cut flowers.
Want to try your hand at picking apples? Drop by, bring a friend, latecomers welcomed. The orchard. Every Saturday at 11:00. At the market for 2:00.

I can’t believe I missed the first apple pick at Spadina! They look gorgeous. Job well done, team.
