Our first apricot pick!
Jul 17th, 2008 by Laura Reinsborough
Last night we harvested from our very first apricot tree. The squirrels had harvested every last bite of the apricots in the next-door neighbour’s yard, so we were lucky to have such abundance in the one we picked from. In numbers, this was out most successful harvest yet, weighing in at 90 pounds of gorgeous fruit. (Although apricots weigh more than cherries, of course.)
Our creativity was put to the test as we had to figure out how to harvest from such a tall tree, but the 24′ extension ladder that we borrowed and our fruit picking tools came in handy. The ladder-holders cleverly donned bicycle helmets to avoid falling apricots, and we practiced our sprints by gathering dropped fruit like tennis ball fetchers. Much talk was had about preserving the windfalls, and so the seed has been planted for a preservation workshop later in the season.
